Fairchild aircraft marks 100 years with Hagerstown Fly-In

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – The Hagerstown Aviation Museum will host a three-day event from Sept. 12 to Sept. 14, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Fairchild Aircraft, honoring its founder, Sherman Fairchild, and showcasing aviation history. The event, held at Hagerstown Regional Airport, invites Fairchild aircraft owners to fly in and display their planes, drawing enthusiasts and community members alike.

Friday, Sept. 12: Fly-in and 1940s hangar dance

The festivities begin Friday, Sept. 12, with vintage aircraft landings at Hagerstown Regional Airport. Fairchild owners are encouraged to complete the Fly-In Interest Form to showcase their aircraft. For a $200 donation, attendees can experience Fairchild Heritage Flights, offering a unique perspective on these historic planes. The evening concludes with a 1940s Hangar Dance at the museum, featuring Big Band music, dancing, food and drinks, evoking the era’s spirit.

Saturday, Sept. 13: Wings & wheels expo

On Saturday, Sept. 13, the museum hosts its annual Wings & Wheels Expo, highlighting its extensive collection of vintage aircraft, including the iconic Fairchild Flight Test Dome Hangar. Visitors can explore aviation exhibits and a Cruise-In showcasing antique cars, trucks, tractors, motorcycles, tractor-trailers, cranes, law enforcement vehicles and SWAT vehicles. Live music starts at noon, complemented by food vendors and local artisans, creating a festive atmosphere.

Sunday, Sept. 14: Speaker series and farewell

Sunday, Sept. 14, begins with morning coffee, doughnuts and aviation fellowship. A speaker series includes a Rosie Reception, celebrating women in aviation, and an A-10 Warthog Roundtable, offering insights into military aviation. The day culminates with a farewell to departing Fairchild aircraft, as visitors watch these historic planes take flight.

Commemorative merchandise

Attendees can purchase commemorative Fairchild badges, pins, dash plaques, shirts and numbered prints by artist Larry Selman, marking the centennial celebration. The event promises a blend of nostalgia, education and community engagement, making it a must-visit for aviation enthusiasts.
