GETTYSBURG – Acting Secretary of Education Dr. Carrie Rowe was to visit Gettysburg Area School District on Tuesday, Aug. 5, to spotlight the impact of Pennsylvania’s free summer meal program, which has seen a 25 percent surge in participation at the district this summer compared to last year.
The event, set for 11:30 a.m. at Gettysburg Area Middle School, will feature Rowe joining students and staff to distribute lunches. The visit underscores the state’s commitment to ensuring children have access to nutritious meals during the summer break.
Pennsylvania supports over 2,100 free summer meal sites statewide, serving children 18 and under. These sites provide vital nutrition to keep students energized while schools are closed. Gov. Josh Shapiro’s 2025-26 budget proposal includes continued funding for universal free breakfast during the school year, marking the third consecutive year of the initiative. This program ensures all 1.7 million Pennsylvania students start their day with a healthy meal, regardless of family income.
Rowe’s visit will highlight the program’s success, with visuals of her handing out meals and engaging with students, families and staff. The Gettysburg Area School District’s summer meal program operates at 37 Lefever St., offering a model for community-based nutrition efforts.
