CHAMBERSBURG – The Franklin County Commissioners have proclaimed September to be Hunger Action Month in Franklin County in an effort to raise awareness of food insecurity and the available resources that can help end hunger in local communities.
Created by Feeding America Food Banks, Hunger Action Month is a national campaign that highlights hunger issues facing communities across the country. Food insecurity – lacking consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy lifestyle – is a real problem for those living in rural communities. Locally, 9.7% of Franklin County residents are considered to be food insecure. Children are also at particular risk of hunger; 1 in every 7 children in Franklin County does not know the source of their next meal.
Each month the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank serves over 152,000 residents in 27 counties, including Franklin County. The Franklin County Commissioners are committed to working with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and its partners, Waynesboro Community and Human Services and South Central Community Action Programs (SCCAP), to combat hunger and provide resources to those in need.
“By recognizing Hunger Action Month, we hope to raise community awareness of the issues facing others and to inspire our residents to do their part to help end hunger and food insecurity, whether that be through volunteerism, monetary contributions or advocacy,” said Franklin County Commissioner Chairman Dave Keller.
