Top-ranked Shippensburg field hockey team opens with a win
SHIPPENSBURG — Freshman Agus Garibaldi (Recoleta, Argentina/Colegio San Agustin) scored the opening goal on Saturday afternoon, as the No.1 Shippensburg University field hockey team scored a 2-0 win over No. 4 Saint Anselm to start its 2022 season.
Shippensburg (1-0) scored one goal each in the third and fourth quarter. Garibaldi scored her first collegiate goal from a short corner pass from sophomore Tess Jedeloo (Amsterdam, The Netherlands/Hervormd Lyceum Zuid) at the top of the circle, to take a 1-0 lead after 31 minutes of playing.
In the fourth quarter, sophomore Valu Paul (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Instituto La Salle Florida) scored off a rebound shot by Jedeloo in the last 10 minutes of the game.
Sophomore Lindsay Tripodo (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional) made three saves, while the backline was made up of three freshmen who held the Hawks to three shots on goal and one penalty corner.
Saint Anselm (0-1) goalkeeper Mackenzie McConnell made 17 saves off 19 shots on goal by the Raiders, including 14 penalty corners.
Shippensburg returns to action next weekend, with a nonconference matchup against Newberry at 3 p.m. at Robb Sports Complex.
Offensive woes send Shippensburg U. football team to opening defeat
INSTITUTE, W.Va. — The Shippensburg University football team was unable to overcome four turnovers in its 2022 season opener Saturday, dropping a 29-6 decision at West Virginia State in nonconference action at Dickerson Stadium.
Shippensburg (0-1) took a 6-3 lead in the first quarter when, following a West Virginia State (1-0) field goal, sophomore Redd Douglas returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown.
It proved to be the only points of the game for the Raiders. SU totaled 174 yards of offense, with sophomore Ian Sheehan (five catches, 71 yards) leading the receivers and redshirt sophomore Nasai Moon (12 carries, 41 yards) leading the ball carriers.
Redshirt freshmen quarterbacks Sam Johnson III and Joey McCracken combined to go 15-of-25 for 146 yards but threw three interceptions, and they were sacked eight times. The longest Raider pass play of the day was a 31-yard connection from McCracken to Sheehan.
Defensively, SU collected 10 tackles for loss (TFL), including two sacks. Riley Good was one of five players with a team-high six tackles, including a team-high three tackles for loss (TFL) that included an 11-yard sack. Javon Cruz had six tackles, including two TFL.
For the second consecutive year in the matchup, West Virginia State held a 10-6 halftime lead. The score remained 10-6 heading into the fourth quarter, when the Yellowjackets pulled away with three touchdowns.
Shippensburg hosts Seton Hill at 1 p.m. Saturday in the home opener at SU Student Association Field at Seth Grove Stadium.
