CHAMBERSBURG—In a continued effort to better address the housing needs of area residents, Franklin County human services staff and volunteers are conducting a Point-in-Time Count Feb. 24 to gauge homelessness across the county.
During a Point-in-Time Count, volunteers canvas areas of the county to count all persons experiencing homelessness on the streets, in shelters, in wooded areas and in temporary housing to better understand the need for housing and supportive services. Information from the count helps officials assist individuals and families secure and maintain stable housing.
Point-in-Time Counts are mandated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In 2020, 90 individuals were accounted for as homeless on the night of the Point-in-Time Count in Franklin County.
Those with housing-related issues are urged to contact a housing specialist through the Franklin County Access Center. Individuals should call 717-261-3893 to learn more about housing services available in Franklin County. Information is also available 24/7 by calling 211.
Anyone with information regarding individuals or families residing in locations that are not meant for human habitation (e.g. tents, garages, on the street, wooded areas, campgrounds, under bridges, abandoned buildings, in vehicles, etc.) is also encouraged to contact the Franklin County Access Center.
