Registration open for WYSA indoor soccer

WAYNESBORO—The Waynesboro Youth Soccer Association in conjunction with the Maiden’s Soccer Booster Club is offering indoor soccer again this year.

The co-ed league will have three divisions: Youth Division 1 (grades 3-5); Youth Division 2 (grades 6-8); and an Adult Division (grade 9 and up).

Youth Division teams will have nine games and adult teams will play eight, with a season-finale tournament on week nine. There are no practices. Youth teams will be coached and directed by Waynesboro’s girls high school team players who volunteer their time.

“Indoor soccer is a lot of fun. It is fast-paced, everyone plays offense and defense and there is also a lot of transition play. Due to lots of shooting, passing, and dribbling, the action keeps going at all times,” said league organizer and Maiden’s Soccer Coach Brian Fisher.

All players will be assigned to teams on a first-come, first-served basis by the league.

“Players can request teams, but there is no guarantee requests can be honored,” said Fisher.  “We do our best to honor requests.”

Fisher said there are space and time limits at the gym that restrict how many players can join.  A maximum of 128 players can sign up—64 youth and 64 adults.

“If you are not able to attend at least 80 percent of the games, it is not recommended that you sign up,” Fisher said. “We want to maximize playing time so they are not just sitting on the bench on a team with six subs. Getting kids to play is the goal and more fun for them.”

Fisher said while the focus on the youth leagues is having fun, developing skills and playing the game, the adult league is fairly competitive.

“We have alumni that come back and a few adults, too,” he said.

All games will be held on nine Sundays at the Waynesboro Senior High School gym: Jan. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; Feb. 6, 13, 20; and March 6. The 50-minute games will start at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., with the exception of Feb. 20.

This is the ninth year Maiden’s Soccer is hosting winter soccer at the Waynesboro Senior High School gymnasium, which can support three games at once. Before that, indoor soccer was held at Fort Ritchey, but demand eventually outgrew the one-field capacity.

Sign-ups will be accepted at www.waynesborosoccer.org.through Dec. 27. Registration is $50 per player and includes a T-shirt. After Dec. 27, registration will be $60 per player. Proceeds benefit the Maiden’s Boosters.

Schedules, rosters, and other information will be posted at www.waynesborosoccer.org.  Contact Brian Fisher at [email protected] for more information.
