Summer stories for kids starts June 10

: Kids listening to a story during a past Summer Stories event. The free story sessions will be held every Tuesday at 10 a.m. from June 10 through July 29 at Pine Hill Recreation Area.

WAYNESBORO – Buttonwood Nature Center’s Summer Stories for Children begin on June 10 and continue every Tuesday through July 29 from 10–11 a.m. at Pine Hill Recreation Area. This is a new location for this annual series. Admission is free.

Children gather in the park to hear stories and enjoy related hands-on crafts and activities. The theme for this year’s stories and activities is “Local Wildlife Tell Their Stories.”

“Each book features a different local wildlife species,” said Mary Claire King, Buttonwood’s watershed science coordinator and the program organizer. “Kids will learn about various kinds of animals that inhabit our woodlands in a series of delightful storybooks.”

The sessions are open to pre-school and older children, but they must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is not required.

This year’s storytellers are current and former Buttonwood educators, board members, staff and volunteers. The schedule of books and storytellers for the season are:

June 10: Shawna Kauffman- “Raccoon and the Hot Air Balloon”[ by Jill Atkins

June 17: Gwendolyn Magras- “Bats at the Library” by Brian Lies

June 24: Alice Noll- “It’s Mine!” By Leo Lionni

July 1: Sue Von Rembow- “Where is Smelly Ann Skunk?” By Janet Hill and Chris Thillen
