Hagerstown to host full slate of events for Memorial Day Weekend

HAGERSTOWN – Residents and visitors to Hagerstown can look forward to a packed Memorial Day weekend, with a variety of free events scheduled throughout the city from Friday, May 23, through Monday, May 26.

Festivities begin Friday

The weekend kicks off Friday evening with “Thunder in the Square,” a car show hosted by the Alsatia Club. The event will run from 5 to 9 p.m. in downtown Hagerstown, lining Public Square, West Washington, South and North Potomac streets with classic cars, trucks, bikes and more.

Also on Friday, University Plaza will host “Music in the Plaza” from 6 to 8 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket or chair for a free concert featuring The Cruisers, who will perform classic jams from the 1950s and 1960s.

Saturday events feature music and chili

On Saturday, University Plaza will be the site of the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts Chili Cook-Off from noon to 5 p.m. The event will feature students from the school’s instrumental department, along with chili tastings and live music.

Later that evening, the Federal City Brass Band will perform a free Memorial Day Candlelight Concert outside at The Maryland Theatre from 7 to 8 p.m. The concert will feature Civil War-era music and is open to the public.

Sunday Farmers Market

The Downtown Farmers Market will take place outside Hub City Brewery on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Shoppers can browse local produce, baked goods, artisan vendors and food trucks.

Memorial Day observances

On Monday, May 26, Mayor Bill McIntire and city council members will honor Memorial Day with a wreath-laying ceremony at Washington County Circuit Court, 24 Summit Ave., at 1 p.m. The American Legion Morris Frock Post 42 will also participate, with additional wreaths placed at multiple locations throughout the city.
