5 things to do this weekend

Chambersburg residents can look forward to a lively weekend with events for all ages, starting Friday with live bluegrass music from the Clendenen Bros. Bluegrass Duo, also at GearHouse. On Saturday, the North Square Farmers Market celebrates its opening day at Chambers Fort Park, 40 Spring St., from 8 a.m. to noon, featuring local foods, crafts and live entertainment. The weekend wraps up Saturday night with a performance by the Wesley Spangler Trio at GearHouse, giving the community a chance to enjoy country rock and Americana tunes. These events aim to support local vendors and bring neighbors together for the start of summer.

Downtown Waynesboro will host the Opening Day Market on Saturday, May 24, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Shoppers can find a variety of plants, baked goods, fresh produce, meat, cheese, breakfast items, mushrooms, honey and crafts. The event invites visitors to come hungry and enjoy a wide selection of locally made and grown products in a festive community atmosphere.

The Boonsboro Rescue Company will host its annual Great Boonsboro Carnival at Shafer Park, 37 Park Drive, from May 23 to May 31. The event features rides, great food, and free nightly music entertainment from well-known recording artists, starting at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., weather permitting. Kitchen and rides open nightly at 5 p.m., with discounted advance wristband tickets available for unlimited rides. The fundraiser supports the Boonsboro Rescue Company’s community efforts. Fans of Taylor Swift will want to mark their calendars for a “Swiftie” wood sign workshop at Hammer & Stain Chambersburg, 31 S. Main St. On Saturday, May 24, starting at 3 p.m., participants can “shake it off” and create custom wood signs inspired by the pop superstar’s iconic lyrics and style. Attendees will choose their own stain and paint colors, using vinyl stencils – no freehand needed – to craft a personalized keepsake. The event promises a perfect “daylight” escape for friends, families, or anyone ready to “begin again” with a creative, music-filled afternoon.

Waynesboro is about to get a dose of laughter as Sasquatch Outdoors presents “Sasquatch After Dark,” a weekend of stand-up comedy at Trigger’s Tap Room, 118 Walnut St. Comedy fans can catch sets from Trevor Austin, Lennon Free, Blake Stalnecker, Scott Kelley and Ridge Hershberger, all wrangled together by host Scott Reed. Doors open at 8 p.m., and the show kicks off at 9 p.m., promising punchlines as fresh as the taproom’s brews. Tickets are $30 with a $15 minimum food or drink order, and proceeds benefit Sasquatch Outdoors, which provides activities for those with disabilities. For those who think they’re funnier than the pros, an open mic event follows on Sunday, May 25, at 6 p.m.

Mercersburg will host a series of community events over Memorial Day weekend, beginning Saturday with the Heavyweight Pulling Champion Horses exhibition at Snider’s Elevator from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., where visitors can meet some of the largest horses in the region and speak with their trainers. At Clayton Memorial Church, the inaugural Lil’ Burg 500 Kid’s Power Wheels Race will take place Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with a $5 entry fee supporting Rocket Totes. On Monday, the annual Memorial Day parade, sponsored by Harry Lackhove Post 517 American Legion, will start at 8:30 a.m. on North Park Street, proceed up Main Street and conclude at the entrance to Fairview Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 9 a.m. at the cemetery’s Memorial Rostrum.
