WASHS recognizes academic and service excellence

WAYNESBORO – Waynesboro Area Senior High School recently held its annual awards evening, honoring students for their exceptional achievements in academics, leadership, athletics, service, and the arts.

Among the honorees, Alison Behnke received the American Legion Military Commitment Award for the Marines, while Emma Bercaw was named the American Legion Essay Contest Winner and received the Waynesboro Studio Club Award. Camryn Bonner earned the Waynesboro College Club award, and Rylan Chandler was presented with the E. Jerry Brooks Academic Excellence Medal.

Other notable recipients included Aubrey Cross, who earned the American Legion Military Commitment Award for the Pennsylvania National Guard, and Azul Cruz-Atlahua, who received the Andree Wilson Taylor Scholarship. Nikki Davis was recognized with the Brunner-Pierce Award, the E. Jerry Brooks Academic Excellence Medal, the Rotary Club Merit Scholarship, the U.S. Marines Scholastic Excellence Award, the WAEA Scholarship, and the Waynesboro College Club award.

Jaeda Dockman, Jonathan Helman, Marissa Hedine, Eric Jacobs, Allison Kuhar, Lucas Parkinson, Farin Parks, Brett Powell, Aria Roell, Colby Smith and Samuel Wagerman were among the many students who received the E. Jerry Brooks Academic Excellence Medal for their outstanding scholastic performance.

Athletic and service awards were also presented. Rayshawn Frazer-Hewitt and Breanna McIlquham received the U.S. Marines Distinguished Athlete Award, while Riley Morgan and Carmyn Dominguez were honored with the Fackler-Hower Sportsmanship Award.

Numerous scholarships were awarded, including the Blue Ridge Landfill Co. Environmental Scholarship to Ethan Hotchkiss, Lily Lehr, Gunner Shiflett, Josh Siecker and Kyle Swanson. The American Legion Military Commitment Awards recognized students entering the Marines, Army, Navy and Pennsylvania National Guard, including Bishop Noble, Jayden Smalls, Falyn Starliper, Isabelle Yohe, Jodan Yohe and Quinton Welsh.

Students such as Nikki Davis, Maia McDonald and Alexis Thompson were recipients of the James Cradler & Judy Paine Cradler award, while Eve Phillips received multiple honors, including the Acacia Lodge 586 Free & Accepted Masons Scholarship and the Bob Hovis Educational Scholarship.

The evening highlighted the diverse talents and dedication of Waynesboro’s graduating seniors, reflecting the school’s commitment to academic, athletic and community excellence.
