Michaux Forest fires show progress

Cumberland County residents who were evacuated due to the Michaux State Forest wildfires received clearance Sunday to return to their homes as crews made progress containing the blazes.

The Cumberland County Department of Public Safety announced the update after fire crews, aided by dry conditions and gusty winds, managed to increase containment of both the Thompson Hollow and Hammonds Rocks fires. The Thompson Hollow Fire, which has burned 2,248 acres, is now 33 percent contained. The Hammonds Rocks Fire, covering 497 acres, has reached 69 percent containment.

Officials said that while rain has moved out of the region, sunny and windy weather could challenge firefighting efforts in the coming days. Standing dead trees, known as snags, remain a significant hazard for crews working in the area.

No injuries or property damage have been reported as a result of the fires. The cause of both fires is under investigation.

Fire crews from Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Ohio have joined local responders to battle the blazes. Authorities continue to urge the public to avoid affected areas and follow guidance on road closures and safety precautions.
