Wildfire spreads across Michaux State Forest, consumes nearly 200 acres

SOUTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Firefighters are battling a fast-moving wildfire that has scorched approximately 200 acres in Michaux State Forest, Cumberland County, since it ignited Wednesday evening.

The blaze began around 5 p.m. near the intersection of Shippensburg and Baltimore roads in Southampton Township, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Initial suppression efforts were launched soon after the fire was reported, but crews were unable to contain the flames as dry conditions and abundant forest debris fueled the spread.

Officials from Michaux State Forest warned that fire activity is expected to intensify throughout Thursday, with aerial firefighting units deployed to assist ground crews. “The fire is spreading because of dry conditions and large amounts of fuel sources, including leaf litter, dead timber, and mountain laurel,” the department stated Thursday morning.

To support firefighting operations and protect public safety, authorities have restricted traffic along Shippensburg and Thompson Hollow roads. Road closures are anticipated to remain in place through the weekend, and residents are urged to avoid the area.

The National Weather Service issued a special statement Thursday, citing a combination of warm temperatures, low humidity, and gusty winds as factors elevating the wildfire risk across the Susquehanna Valley. The period of greatest danger for rapid fire spread is expected between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday. Residents are advised to exercise caution with ignition sources such as machinery, cigarettes, and matches, as fires could quickly escalate under current conditions.

State officials emphasized that updates will be provided as more information becomes available. The situation remains fluid as crews work to contain the blaze and protect surrounding communities.
