Feathers, Fur & Fins: Wildlife and Water Habitats set at Buttonwood

Meredith Meck created the design for the 2024 WACA auction T-shirt.

WAYNESBORO—Buttonwood Nature Center’s spring speaker series, Feathers, Fur & Fins: Wildlife and Water Habitats concludes on Thursday, March 20 with “Waterways of the PA South-Central Region—Fishing, Boating and More.”

Presented by Sarah Bartle, waterways conservation officer, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, with Sonny Freeman, deputy waterways conservation officer, the program is at 7 p.m. in the social room at Church of the Apostles in Waynesboro. Admission is free.

“South-central Pennsylvania has many opportunities for outdoor recreation on area waterways, with several popular destinations for fishing, paddling and boating,” Bartle said.

This presentation will discuss what types of fish may be found in area streams, lakes and ponds, including native brook trout, largemouth bass and others. Local water recreational opportunities and resources available to the public will also be explored.

Bartle grew up in Franklin County. She earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in earth and biological sciences from Shippensburg University.

After working offshore as a biologist and researcher in Virginia, Bartle moved back to Pennsylvania to work as a biologist for a consulting company.

Her current position as a waterways conservation officer combines her interest in law enforcement and her biological studies background.

“The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission works to protect, conserve and enhance fishing and boating opportunities and resources across the state,” Bartle said.

The speaker series is sponsored by Robert and Grace Brown, with additional support from Buttonwood’s Today’s Horizon Fund contributors: The Nora Roberts Foundation; APX Enclosures; Don Gibe and Nancy Erlanson; and the family of the late Carolyn Terry Eddy, with daughters Connie Fleagle & Kim Larkin.
