Mastriano leads charge with “Jonny’s Law”

Sen. Doug Mastriano (R-Franklin/Adams) is spearheading a legislative initiative in response to a tragic event that highlights the need for what he feels are stricter anti-bullying measures in schools. The proposed bill, known as “Jonny’s Law,” aims to address the serious issue of bullying and its potentially devastating consequences.

The legislation is named after Jonny Tomasello who, at 15 years old, committed suicide due to bullying at his high school in Adams County. Mastriano’s bill seeks to establish stricter regulations and protocols for handling bullying complaints in educational institutions.

Suicide has been listed as the second highest cause of death for teens. One of the prime environments for interventions is schools, the origin of both stressors and protective factors for many teens.

Key aspects of “Jonny’s Law:”
  1. Mandatory response: The bill would require school administrators, teachers and coaches to take bullying complaints seriously and act upon them promptly.
  2. Accountability measures: Schools failing to address bullying adequately could face civil liabilities or even criminal charges.
  3. Education and prevention: The legislation aims to provide training for faculty and staff on identifying signs of bullying, implementing prevention strategies and supporting victims effectively.

Mastriano emphasized the urgent need for this law, citing the alarming link between bullying and suicide among young people. He believes that by taking a proactive approach, schools can create safer and more supportive environments for all students.

The senator said his efforts have garnered support from the family of the young student, who are turning their grief into advocacy. They believe that the proposed law has the potential to save lives and hope it will prevent other families from experiencing similar tragedies, Mastriano said.

As “Jonny’s Law” moves forward, it represents a significant step towards creating safer and more compassionate school environments, Mastriano said.
