Washington County Museum of Fine Arts offers upcoming events calendar

HAGERSGTOWN – The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts is publishing the following schedule of upcoming events and activities:

EXHIBITIONS

Through April 6 – Recent Acquisitions

Some 90 works acquired by the museum since 2019, representing a variety of international artists and including an eclectic array of paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings and decorative objects, ranging from the 17th century to the present. 

Through May 11 – The Sincerest Form: Master Art Copyists

Special project featuring the work of regionally based artists officially authorized as “master copyists” by the National Gallery of Art, creating on-site new copies, Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.  This project has been generously supported by Raymond James, Inc.

May 10, 1-3 p.m. Master Art Copyists close-out ceremony and panel discussion; FREE, light refreshments.

March 29-July 27 – Cumberland Valley Photographers

Juried, annual exhibition showcasing artists of the Cumberland Valley region. Organized by the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, support for the exhibition has been provided by Conservit, Inc., and Delaplaine Foundation, Inc; awards funded by Jennifer Jones of Cooling Services, Inc.; Hugh and Marty Talton; Nora and Bruce Wilder (Best in Show); Sherry Cramer (Juror’s Awards); Louis Kawaja in honor of Ms. Mary Helen Strauch; and Washington County Arts Council (Juror’s Awards).​

April 12 – May 4 – Washington County Public Schools Art Exhibition

Elementary: April 12-20; Open House for families and friends April 12 & 13, 11-4 p.m.; extended Museum hours, 5-8 p.m., April 16.

Secondary: April 26-May 4; The Secondary WCPS Art Exhibition and Capital Women’s Care Art Competition, featuring outstanding work from middle and high school; open house April 27, 11 a.m.- 4 p.m.

Organized by the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with Washington County Public Schools, this exhibition is generously sponsored by Volvo Mack Truck, the Washington County Arts Council and Kevin Murray, M.D.

PROGRAMS

April 3, 5:30-7 p.m.​​​​​​​​​, Concert:  Pianist Thomas Pandolfi​​​​​​​​, “A master of both the grand gesture and the sensual line…” (The Washington Post); Tickets: $25 members; $30 general public. Readers may phone 301-739-5727 for ticket purchase information. 

Wednesday, April 9 – Art Social Hour with Director of Education Kellie Marz Mele, 12 noon-1 p.m.

Educators’ Special: A Social Hour for Art Enthusiasts.​ Art teachers will share a favorite lesson they implemented this year, describing the lesson, the materials used and how students responded. Open to anyone interested in the creativity and thought that goes into developing an engaging art lesson. FREE. Open to Museum members only. Readers may call 301-739-5727 to receive link.

April 12 & 19, 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. ​​​​​​Workshops: Charcoal Portraits with Gold Leaf ​​​​​​. Two Saturday workshops with portrait artist Nicole Troup. A photo reference and material list will be provided for the students after registering for the workshop. The workshops will include a lunch break.  $140 museum members, $160 public; materials not included. Advance registration is required at 301-739-5727.

Saturday, April 19, 6 -7 p.m., Let’s Talk Art—with Executive Director Sarah J. Hall. An in-depth conversation about the role of copying in the fine arts and a personal look at the museum works the Master Art Copyists have copied. April 25-26, Art in Bloom:  A weekend of bountiful beauty in support of the Museum of Fine Arts. Preview Party, April 25, 6-8 p.m. ​​​​​​​The freshest look at painting-inspired floral arrangements and floral-inspired refreshments at the annual fundraiser preview party. $50 per person.  

Art in Bloom Festival, April 26:

*1-3 p.m. –  Floral demonstration and workshop

*3-4:30 p.m. – Family Flower Frenzy: an afternoon of creative challenges and games perfect for families looking to engage with art in a new and playful way!  (TICKETED EVENT)

*6-8 p.m. – Flower Power Cocktail hour: An evening of elegant botanicals and guided tasting of floral and herb-infused artisanal gin. (Ages 21+) (TICKETED EVENT)

Wednesday, May 14, 12 noon – 1 p.m. Art Social Hour with Executive Director Sarah J. Hall. A close look at and conversation about Grace Hartigan’s (American,1922 – 2008) Hake; FREE, open to Museum members only. Members may register in advance to receive the link: 301-739-5727.

The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, located on the lakefront at Hagerstown City Park,was established in 1931 by William H. Singer, Jr. and Anna Brugh Singer and has an extensive, world-class permanent collection of paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures from the 15thcentury, (plus older Roman and Egyptian artifacts) to the present, featuring celebrated and diverse artists. The Museum offers tours, classes, educational programs and community events and is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Closed Mondays and major holidays. Admission and parking are free. For more information, readers may visit wcmfa.org.
