THURMONT, Md. – The annual Maple Syrup Festival is set to sweeten up Cunningham Falls State Park on March 8-9 and 15-16. This beloved event, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day, marks its 54th year of celebrating the rich sugaring traditions of the Appalachian Mountains.
Visitors can witness the age-old process of transforming sap into syrup through hourly demonstrations at the Sugar Shack. The air will be filled with the sounds of live bluegrass music as guests savor a traditional pancake and sausage breakfast, topped with locally-made maple syrup.
For those seeking adventure, hayrides through the Maple Grove offer a chance to see how park rangers collect sap. Families can also participate in the great pancake race, testing their skills at flipping flapjacks while on the run.
The festival, organized by the Friends of Cunningham Falls and Gambrill State Parks, serves as their largest annual fundraiser. A $5 donation per person is requested at the entrance, with proceeds benefiting the nonprofit organization.
Park officials remind visitors that the event is ADA accessible, and pets are welcome on leashes in outdoor areas only. With its blend of education, entertainment and delicious treats, the Maple Syrup Festival promises to be a sweet start to the spring season for all who attend.
