The Waynesboro Indians boys’ varsity basketball team is slowly putting together some time together on the playing court and translating it into wins.
Head coach Tom Hoffman has been carefully using an incremental approach to give his still-maturing team the best chance to win. On Thursday, Dec. 19, the Tribe improved to 4-2 after defeating Shippensburg 43-31 in Shippensburg.
The double-digit victory followed a disappointing performance against Greencastle-Antrim on Monday. In that game, the host Blue Devils turned away the Indians 58-39.
Waynesboro had two double-digit scorers in this low-scoring game. Alex Torbica, whose impact has become more and more evident of late, finished with 13 points. Carter Hough tallied 11 points.
Waynesboro led 8-7 after the first quarter and led 20-18 at halftime. The Indians outscored the Greyhounds 16-8 in the third period and held Shippensburg to five points in the fourth stanza.
Last Friday the Indians defeated West Perry 51-33 in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division contest. Waynesboro built a 29-12 lead by halftime and never looked back.
Hough, Waynesboro’s point guard, led the team in scoring with 13 points. He was 2-for-3 from beyond the 3-point arc. Hough added an impressive seven assists.
Nate Nystrom finished with 12 points, while Torbica and Frazer-Hewitt each scored eight points. Torbica pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
In Waynesboro’s last three wins, opposing teams averaged 34.6 points. Waynesboro averaged 48 points a game in that span of time.
Waynesboro will play at the Eastern York Holiday Tournament on Friday, Dec. 27 and Saturday, Dec. 28 at Eastern York High School in Wrightsville. Waynesboro will play host Eastern York on the 28th at 4:30 p.m. Bethlehem Catholic play Spring Grove at 3.
