David Lafayette Taylor, 89, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, surrounded by his loving family at Mercy House, Chambersburg, PA.

Born on May 20, 1935, in Calico Rock, Arkansas, David was the son of the late Thurman L. and Eunice Inez (Sanders) Taylor.

On July 23, 1952, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and proudly served during the Korean War. He spent four years in active duty and another four years in the reserves, earning an honorable discharge in June 1960.

While stationed at Biggs Air Force Base in El Paso, Texas, David met the love of his life, Vicky Y. (Wright) Taylor. The two were married on June 2, 1956, and together they raised eight children.

Following his military service, David enjoyed a successful 35-year career as an electronic engineer with Raytheon, where he played an instrumental role in maintaining the Hawk Missile System and developing the Patriot Missile System. He retired in September of 2000.

Because of his career, David was able to travel extensively across the globe, most often with his family in tow. David was a man of many talents and interests. Known for his sharp mind and generous spirit, he mentored many. His intelligence and humor made him an exceptional problem solver, an amazing mentor, and a skilled carpenter. He loved to solve challenging crossword puzzles and Sudoku. He was also famous for his fantastic Donald Duck impersonations.

Whether telling his famous “dad jokes” or offering a witty comment, David’s sense of humor was infectious. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, always offering his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering love to his family.

David is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Vicky, and their eight children: Michelle Taylor of Mercersburg, PA; Trish Cosey (Brent) of Marion, PA; Deborah “Debi” Seiders of Shippensburg, PA; David E. Taylor (Penny) of Phoenix, AZ; Rebecca Taylor of Lanexa, VA; Larry Taylor of Roswell, NM; Michael Taylor of Chambersburg, PA; and Stephen Taylor of Baltimore, MD. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren, over 45 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian; three great-grandchildren: Alexander, Katy Belle, and Caleigh Ainsley; and his two siblings: Ruth Fern Taylor and Betty Sue Young.

A celebration of David’s life will take place on Monday, October 7, 2024, at 2:00 P.M. at Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle, PA, with Rev. Dr. A. Robert Cook officiating. Military honors will follow the service, provided by Charles Nitterhouse V.F.W. Post #1599.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects one hour before the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mercy House, 730 Norland Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
