The Pennsylvania Game Commission is urging hikers with pets on the Appalachian Trail to be on the lookout for potentially dangerous dog treats scattered along the path.
Over the weekend, a hiker reported finding dog treats stuffed with fish hooks near the George W. Outerbridge shelter on the Appalachian Trail in Lehigh County. The shelter is located on the North Trail Loop leading to the shelter on State Game Lands #217.
“Items like these could prove deadly to any animal that consumes them, including wild and domesticated animals,” said the Game Commission in a statement.
The Appalachian Trail is a 2,190+ mile long footpath that crosses through 14 states from Georgia to Maine. According to the National Park Service, dogs must be on a leash on the 40% of the trail that uses National Park Service-administered land.
Hikers and pet owners are advised to be vigilant and keep a close eye on their animals while on the trail. If anyone has information about the incident or locates additional tainted treats, they are urged to contact the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s hotline at 1-888-PGC-WILD or 1-888-PGC-HUNT immediately. The investigation into the source and motive behind the tainted treats is ongoing. The Pennsylvania Game Commission is working closely with local authorities to ensure the safety of all Appalachian Trail users and their pets.
