Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day

Veterans Day was originally observed as Armistice Day, marking the end of fighting in World War I on Nov. 11, 1918.

The armistice took effect at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, ending hostilities on the Western Front.

The observance initially honored World War I veterans and reflected hopes for lasting peace. Those hopes were challenged when World War II began in Europe on Sept. 1, 1939.

Following World War II and the Korean War, the federal government expanded the holiday to recognize veterans of all American wars.

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation officially changing the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.

The holiday now recognizes all Americans who have served in the U.S. armed forces.
