WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Buttonwood Nature Center is launching a new year-round program series featuring art and nature.
The inaugural program, Painting Fall Leaves, is on Thursday, Nov. 19 from 6–8 p.m. at the Church of the Apostles in Waynesboro, Pa.
Join Buttonwood educator and artist, Michelle Smith, for an evening of creativity and nature inspiration.
Participants will learn various watercolor techniques to paint realistic fall leaves. A collection of fall leaves will be provided; however, participants may gather and bring their favorite fall leaves.
Beginners and experienced painters are welcome.
Additional “Painting the Colors of Nature” sessions will happen every third Thursday of the month, with a different focus each month.
Smith came to Buttonwood after an extensive career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) at the National Conservation Training Center (NCTC).
A talented artist, she created illustrations for conservation and educational materials for the USFWS and NCTC, using watercolor, acrylic, and other media.
She also has experience teaching adults and children and has a particular passion for sharing her love of art and nature.
“I have years of experience with various fine art mediums—however, watercolor is my favorite,” Smith said. “I am excited to share my love of watercolor with others at Buttonwood.”
Smith serves as the Pennsylvania state coordinator of the Federal Junior Duck Stamp program, now based at Buttonwood Nature Center. Previously she was state coordinator for West Virginia at NCTC.
The watercolor sessions are part of Buttonwood’s community learning programs and are open to adults and teens age 15 and up.
The fee for this inaugural session is $25, which includes quality art materials (watercolor paper, brushes, paints, water container, cotton rag, pencil, copy paper for tracing). Participants may bring their own supplies.
Register on Buttonwood’s website, www.buttonwoodnaturecenter.org, before the Nov. 12 deadline. Limited to 12. Please register early—we must meet a minimum number of participants.
