CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Fire departments across the Midstate are sharing safety tips, visiting schools and opening their stations to the public during Fire Prevention Week, which runs Oct. 4-10.
The Chambersburg Fire Department is highlighting safe charging practices as part of the National Fire Protection Association’s campaign, “Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”
Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries power many everyday devices, including phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, toys, e-bikes and scooters. When damaged or improperly used, those batteries can catch fire.
The department recommends using the right charger and charging devices on a hard, flat surface.
“Safe charging is something we can all practice every day,” said Dustin Ulrich, Chambersburg’s fire chief and EMS director. “Taking a few simple precautions when charging our devices can help reduce the risk of battery-related fires and keep our homes and families safe.”
The campaign aims to raise awareness of battery-related fire risks and help people develop safer charging habits.
“Because lithium-ion batteries are a newer technology, not everyone is aware of the potential dangers they present, particularly when it comes to charging them safely,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of outreach and advocacy. “Our goal for this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign is to help people make informed choices and practice simple habits that can help greatly reduce these risks.”
