Mr. John P. Potochney, 92, a resident of Viva Senior Living, Hagerstown, MD and formerly of Waynesboro, PA passed away Thursday, October 1, 2026, in the senior living center.
Born March 25, 1934 in West Hazelton, PA, he was the son of the late Peter and Mary (Ogorzalek) Potochney.
He was a graduate of West Hazelton High School and later earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Penn State University.
John served in the United States Air Force in Alaska.
He and his wife of over 62 years, Gretchen K. (Bock) Potochney, were married on February 1, 1964 in Virginia.
John worked for the Federal Government as an accountant in the General Accounting Office in Washington, D.C. He retired in 1989 after more than 30 years of service.
He was an avid fan of Penn State Football and held season tickets for many years. He also enjoyed art, music, opera, dance and reading.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Jeffrey J. Potochney (Patsy) of New Jersey; two grandsons, Maxwell and Samuel; one brother, Norman Potochney of Massachusetts; and two nieces.
Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, October 8, 2026 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, PA. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro, where military honors will be conducted by the honor guard of Charles Nitterhouse V.F.W. Post #1599, Chambersburg.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services, Thursday afternoon, in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
