Waynesboro is playing an inspired brand of volleyball right now.
The Maidens — still mourning the unexpected passing of beloved head coach Kim Saunders in the preseason — have been battling hard through a challenging schedule in the Mid-Penn Colonial Division. Waynesboro took a big step forward last week, defeating Chambersburg 3-2 in a crossover game on Monday, before posting a 3-0 statement victory over backyard rival Greencastle-Antrim in a crucial division game on Tuesday. The Maidens now own sole possession of first place in the Colonial.
Chambersburg’s field hockey squad had a big bounce-back week, going 3-0 against division opponents and outscoring them 10-0 in the process. The Trojans, who were an afterthought in the division just a week ago, are now within striking distance of a title.
Speaking of Chambersburg, the girls cross country squad seized victory in the final dual meet of the season to win a share of the Commonwealth Division. The Trojans went on to compete at the loaded Carlisle Invitational and were led by the efforts of Natalie Quinn, who exploded for a sixth-place finish in 18:15.5, and Lillian Spohn, who claimed 24th in 19:14.1. As fast as Quinn ran, North Hagerstown’s super sophomore twins Mackenzie Philp (3rd in 18:02.6) and Caroline Philp (4th in 18:04.2) stole the show. Waynesboro’s Morgan Jones landed 18th in 19:04.5.
Smithsburg’s boys shined at the Carlisle Invitational. Dylan Herbst took seventh in 15:58.1, while Grayson Wynkoop claimed 23rd in 16:25.0.
On the girls soccer pitch, North Hagerstown suffered its first loss of the season, a 3-1 setback to Oakdale. How did the Hubs respond? They toppled Frederick by a 3-0 score.
South Hagerstown and Chambersburg both picked up their first wins in football, while Smithsburg continued its magical start to the season by posting a 28-6 win over Brunswick. The Leopards are now 4-0.
Finally, rain forced a postponement of the Mid-Penn Golf Championship. The event will now be held on Tuesday.
