BOONSBORO, Md. — Political disagreements can put stress on families, friends and communities. To help, the League of Women Voters of Washington County invites local residents to an evening event on disagreeing respectfully.
From 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 10, the organization will introduce Braver Angels at Vanish il Forno, located at 7704 Old National Pike in Boonsboro.
Braver Angels is a national nonprofit organization that brings together people with different political views for constructive conversations and to strengthen American democracy.
The event aims to help Washington County residents become familiar with the organization’s methods and provide practical techniques they can use when navigating political disagreements in daily life.
Building conversations across political differences
The evening is not intended to be a political debate, rally or effort to convince participants to change their beliefs. Instead, the meeting will focus on building communication skills that help people understand each other better, even when they strongly disagree.
Participants will learn about Braver Angels’ mission and approach, practice conversation techniques, and explore ways to listen with curiosity, avoid misunderstandings, and find common ground.
The event also gives attendees a chance to meet other Washington County residents who want to strengthen their community through respectful conversation.
The event comes at a time when organizers stress the need to maintain productive relationships despite political and ideological differences.
The League of Women Voters has said that as Washington County grows and changes, so too does the need for residents to engage respectfully with one another.
Registration and dinner
Registration for the Sept. 10 program requires a small donation to the League of Women Voters of Washington County.
Dinner is not required. Attendees who wish to eat may order separately from the Vanish il Forno menu at their own expense.
The event is open to anyone interested in learning how to have more constructive conversations across political differences, regardless of political beliefs.
