Bonita L. “Bonnie” Byers, 89, of Chambersburg, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 23, 2026 in Paramount Senior Living, Fayetteville, PA. Born February 7, 1937 in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Ralph H. and Zoa E. (Martin) Johnston.
Bonnie was a 1955 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School. Early in her life, she was employed by the Stanley Company as head office secretary before dedicating most of her time to creating a loving home for her family. She was a faithful member of Grand Point Church, where she taught children’s Sunday School and served for many years as a Bible Release Time teacher.
As a resident of Stonebrook, Bonnie appreciated the companionship of staff and residents and enjoyed playing bingo. Above all, her family was the joy of her life. She treasured spending time with her children and grandchildren, whether gathered around the table for mealtimes, enjoying days at the beach, traveling to Disney World, or simply sharing in family activities. Bonnie had a genuine appreciation for the simple things in life and found her greatest happiness in the love and companionship of her family.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, William S. Byers, whom she married July 5, 1959; two children, Tammy Byers and Michael Byers (Beth) both of Chambersburg; two grandchildren, Brady Byers (Kylee Fennel) and Sydni Byers (fiancé Elijah Snyder) both of Chambersburg; and a sister Connie Abbott of Chambersburg. Aside from her parents, Bonnie is preceded in death by seven siblings, June Foreman, Edna Tarner, Dolores St. Clair, Peg Shearer, Patricia Spidel, Zoa Rhea Johnston, and Ralph “Jim” Johnston, Jr. and Fred Bull, partner of Tammy.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at Grand Point Church, 2230 Grand Point Rd, Chambersburg, PA 17202. Rev. Scott Despres and Rev. Dr. Earl Mills will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Saturday morning in the church. Private interment will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens at the convenience of the family.
