Reflections on education from Almanack

HAGERSTOWN, Md. — With the first day of school coming up quickly and summer nearing its end, it is a good time for some inspirational reflections from the 2026 Almanack.

A reflection from days past

A reflection from the Almanack in 1926 from John Locke shows that inspiration can be timeless.

“Education begins the gentleman, but reading, good company, and reflection finish him.”

Fifty years later, Daniel Webster’s words were shared in the 1976 Almanack.

“When tillage begins, other arts follow. The farmers, therefore, are the founders of human civilization.”

History speaks

The world has had many great leaders and great orators. Here are some thoughts from some of the best.

“Change is the law of life and those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.”   -John F. Kennedy

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”  – Maya Angelou

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”  – Nelson Mandela

Strong words on education

With school about to start once again, here are some words to inspire the mind of the ever-seeking learner.

“Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experiences that reveals the human spirit.”  – E.E. Cummings

“Always work hard and have fun in what you do because I think that’s when you’re more successful. You have really to choose to do it.”  – Simone Biles

“If you don’t make the time to work on creating the life you want, you’re eventually going to be forced to spend a lot of your time dealing with a life that you really didn’t want.”  – Kevin Ngo
