Tourism ambassadors visit Monterey Pass

WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Several Certified Tourism Ambassadors attended a history talk and tour of Monterey Pass Battlefield Park and Museum led by ambassador program coordinator and local historian John Miller.

If you’ve never visited Monterey Pass, you are missing out, officials said. It is a 125-acre natural, cultural and historical park located in Washington Township, Franklin County. The museum shares the story of what happened after the battle at Gettysburg.

After three days of battle in Gettysburg, both sides had taken substantial losses, and Robert E. Lee’s remaining troops needed to withdraw and regroup. Sixty miles of wagons loaded with troops and supplies began their retreat toward Williamsport, Maryland, and about 20 miles of those wagons made their journey to Williamsport via Monterey Pass.

Today guests can explore the grounds and the museum to learn all about what happened next.

If this sounds like your sort of activity, consider joining the next Certified Tourism Ambassador meet-up. Held Aug. 18 at Enoch Brown Park in Greencastle, the meet-up will include an informational discussion and tour of the Enoch Brown School massacre site followed by a gathering at Gems Alehouse for food and fellowship.

Plus, you’ll learn about the Certified Tourism Ambassador program, its benefits and how you can join. Registration for the Enoch Brown Meet-up is free; however, you do need to secure your spot ahead of time by clicking here.

The Franklin County Visitors Bureau will also be hosting classes for those interested in becoming a Certified Tourism Ambassador.
