Mr. Richard L. “Scruff” Patterson, Sr., passed away Friday, July 31, 2026, in Wellspan York Hospital.
Born November 29, 1955, in Waynesboro, PA, he was the son of the late Clarence R. Patterson Sr., and Kathryn E. (Spidle) Patterson.
Mr. Patterson attended Waynesboro area schools.
In his younger years, he worked at various orchards. He later went on to work for several companies such as Regency, Grove manufacturing, Larry Little Painting, and the Owl’s Club.
He was a member of the Owl’s Club, Waynesboro, life member of the Mercersburg Sportsmen Association and the South Mountain Fish and Game. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and taking care of his cats. Whether on his front porch or at the Owl’s club, he found happiness in relaxing and talking with his friends and family. To many, he was a good friend, and to few, a loyal brother.
He is survived by one daughter, Terrie R. Frank; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Lawrence “Gook” Patterson; one sister-in-law, Barb Patterson; and several nieces & nephews, as well as an extended host of friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Richard L. “Jake” Patterson Jr.; one daughter, Elizabeth E. Patterson; his siblings, Norman “June” Patterson, Sr., Clarence R. “Bill” Patterson, Jr., Kathy “Judy” Patterson, and Brenda Patterson; and one sister-in-law, Penny Patterson.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro, is handling the arrangements.
