HAGERSTOWN, Md. — The Washington County Golf Hall of Fame’s 2026 induction class will come straight out of high school.
The Hall of Fame will honor the 2005 Smithsburg golf team that won the Maryland 2A-1A state championship – the only team title in the sport ever won by a Washington County school.
The class will be inducted at Beaver Creek Country Club on Aug. 4 with a full day of festivities. The Hall of Fame will host a golf outing starting at 10 a.m. After the event, a social hour will be held at 4:30 p.m., followed by dinner and the ceremonies.
The Leopards, coached by Dan Neff, won the abbreviated 2005 tournament with a team score of 321 to nudge out Stephen Decatur by one shot at the University of Maryland in College Park. The four-player team featured Brandon Sheaffer, Alicia (Grier) Moorhead, Dennis Herbert and Alex Wine. The foursome and Neff will be inducted.
The HOF will also induct four individual state champions from Smithsburg. They include 1990 winner Angela Wacker-Williams, as well as the 2000 duo of Seiji Hirai and Ashley Grier as boys and girls champions and 2008 champion Haeun Lee.
A special recognition award will be presented to Dave Walker, a longtime golf advocate and past president of the Middle Atlantic PGA. Also being honored will be J.P. Lunn, former club professional at Fountain Head Country Club, and Holly Hills, past president (2018-19) of the Middle Atlantic PGA.
Current members of the Hall of Fame are: Dirk Schultz, Greg Henry, Mark Weber, Dave Grier, Al Gardner, Chuck Pessagno, Rod Steiner, Bert Yingling and Lumar Slocum in 2019; Dick Roulette, Chuck Ingram, Greg McNaney and James Johnson in 2020; Ken Lampard, Ashley Grier, Lee Cordell and Tim Koelble in 2021; Tim Steiner and Chuck Thatcher in 2022; Randy Barnes and Elaine Morris in 2024. There were no inductions in 2023 and 2025.
