5 things to do this weekend

A day of family fun and community pride will culminate in a sky-lit finale as the Waynesboro Summer Jubilee marks its 30th year July 4 at 500 E. Main St.. The celebration will feature a full slate of events including a Kid’s 1-mile run at 7:30 a.m., the Firecracker 5K at 8 a.m., a 9:30 a.m. parade, vendors, live entertainment, a Kid’s Zone, and a new sensory-friendly tent, all aimed at bringing the community together finishing the night with a privately funded firework display. (Note: The Jubilee is still on as scheduled, though the Boro Gash and hot dog eating contest have been rescheduled for Aug. 22, due to the extreme heat.)

History comes alive as the nation marks a milestone birthday with “…and zeal for liberty…,” a two-day living history event celebrating America’s 250th anniversary at Fort Frederick State Park. Hosted by Maryland Park Service interpretive staff and volunteers, the program will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 4-5 at the park, 11100 Fort Frederick Road, Big Pool, featuring reenactors portraying Revolutionary War-era men and women, musket firing demonstrations and military and children’s drills. The event highlights the fort’s role during the American Revolution while offering an immersive, family-friendly way to commemorate Independence Day and reflect on the nation’s founding.

Carroll Valley will be running its 250th Independence Celebration at 33 Valley View Trail in Fairfield. Guests can enjoy live music, food vendors and local artists. The festivities will begin at 4 p.m., and the grand finale fireworks will begin at 9:45 p.m.

With fireworks in the sky and history on full display, Washington County will mark a once-in-a-generation milestone as it celebrates both America’s and the county’s 250th anniversaries during a free public event at noon July 4 at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center, 7313 Sharpsburg Pike, Boonsboro. Hosted by Washington County government, the celebration commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence and highlights the county’s heritage and future with a lineup that includes a drone show, fireworks, live music, a beer garden, food trucks, vendors, a car show, games and a kids zone. Organizers say the event is part of a broader yearlong series honoring the region’s history and community spirit. Patriotic tunes will set the stage for an evening of music and fireworks as the Mercersburg Area Community Band launches its 41st summer season with a July 4 concert at Chambersburg Memorial Park. Under the direction of Jack Hawbaker, the band will perform from 8 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 4, in a free, family-friendly event open to the public, culminating in a fireworks display. The annual performance celebrates Independence Day while showcasing local musicians and providing a shared community gathering in a festive outdoor setting.
