HAGERSTOWN, Md. — A single electric vehicle caught fire Friday afternoon along Wesel Boulevard near Martin’s Grocery Store, prompting a prolonged response from Hagerstown Fire Department crews.
Units were dispatched around 1:13 p.m. and arrived to find the vehicle smoking beside an electric charging station. Battalion Chief 3 later reported the vehicle’s battery had entered thermal runaway, a condition that can cause sustained and intense burning.
Firefighters protected nearby exposures and allowed the vehicle to burn under controlled conditions due to the hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries. Crews remained on scene for an extended period as the incident was brought under control.
