CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — A four-legged member of the Franklin County Adult Probation Department is being recognized for a year of service that has left a lasting impression on staff and the community alike.
Officer Dudley, the department’s comfort dog, marked his first anniversary June 16 after a year spent offering support in courtrooms, offices and community settings. Since joining the department, Dudley has interacted with hundreds of individuals, often providing calm and reassurance during stressful situations.
Handlers and staff say Dudley’s presence has been especially meaningful for children navigating difficult moments at the courthouse. Beyond his work inside the building, he has become a familiar face at public events, including parades, school visits, career days and Read Across America programs.
Dudley has also participated in trainings and regularly makes rounds through department hallways, where employees say he brings a sense of ease to the workday. His role, while informal in nature, reflects a growing recognition of the benefits comfort animals can provide in high-stress environments.
Department officials credited Dudley’s handlers, along with judges, court staff and probation employees, for embracing the program and helping expand its reach over the past year. Community members have also embraced Dudley, stopping to greet him, share treats and take photos during public appearances.
While Dudley may be just one dog, staff say his impact has extended far beyond simple interactions, helping foster a more welcoming atmosphere within the courthouse and beyond.
As he begins his second year with the department, those who work alongside him say they look forward to continuing the connections he has helped build across Franklin County.
