Buttonwood Nature Center launches summer story series for kids

Barry and Lisa Donohoe read to kids during last year’s Summer Stories event. The free story sessions will be held every Tuesday at 10 a.m. from June 9 through July 28 at Pine Hill Recreation Area.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Buttonwood Nature Center’s Summer Stories for Children begin on June 9 and continue every Tuesday through July 28 from 10–11 a.m. at Pine Hill Recreation Area near Waynesboro, Pa. Admission is free.

Children gather in the park to hear stories and enjoy related hands-on crafts and activities. The theme for this year’s stories and activities is “Oh, The places you go—in summer!”

“Each book features some of the places that are visited in summer, like the beach or the zoo,” said Mary Claire King, Buttonwood’s community science coordinator and the program organizer.

The sessions are open to pre-school and older children, but they must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is not required.

This year’s storytellers are current and former Buttonwood educators, board members, staff and volunteers. The schedule of books for the season are:
June 9: And Then Comes Summer by Tom Brenner
June 16: The Night Before Summer Camp by Natasha Wing
June 23: The Relatives Came by Cynthia Rylant
June 30: Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall
July 7: Roller Coaster by Marla Frazee
July 14: Zoo Day by Anne Rockwell
July 21: Simon at the Art Museum by Christina Soontornvat
July 28: The Sandcastle that Lola Built by Megan Maynor

The program is part of Buttonwood’s Summer Programs for kids. Information about additional summer programs for youth is available at www.buttonwoodnaturecenter.org.

If the weather is inclement, check Buttonwood Nature Center’s website or Facebook page, or call 717-762-0373.
