FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. — The music is on as “A Night with Janis Joplin” officially opened at Totem Pole Playhouse. Running May 29 through June 13, this electrifying regional premiere—presented in partnership with Gretna Theatre—launches the Playhouse’s summer season with a high-energy theatrical concert celebrating one of rock and roll’s most legendary voices.
More than a traditional musical, “A Night with Janis Joplin” is a full rock concert experience featuring a live onstage band performing many of Janis Joplin’s most iconic hits, including “Piece of My Heart,” “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Cry Baby” and “Mercedes Benz.”
The Broadway sensation traces Janis Joplin’s journey from her Texas roots to her meteoric rise in the 1960s rock scene while honoring the blues and soul artists who inspired her sound. Along the way, audiences are introduced to the music and influence of legendary women including Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Etta James, Bessie Smith and Odetta.
Leading the production as Janis Joplin is Francesca Ferrari, who previously performed the role on the national tour of “A Night with Janis Joplin.” She is joined by a powerhouse cast of vocalists and musicians bringing the music, energy and spirit of the era to life on stage. You don’t have to be a Janis Joplin fan to love this show. This production takes audience members back to a wild and joyful era of America. Producing Artistic Director Ryan Gibbs said, “If you grew up with Janis, it will take you back to your youth as much as it will inspire the youth of today.”
“This is not a traditional musical—it’s a full concert experience inside the theatre,” said Totem Pole leadership. “From the live band to the incredible vocals, audiences are going to feel completely immersed in the music and energy of Janis Joplin and the artists who inspired her.”
The production also marks a major milestone for Totem Pole Playhouse, as all three musicals in the 2026 summer season will feature live musicians on stage for the first time since 2020.
