WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Waynesboro College Club awarded a total of $35,000 in scholarships to six students at Waynesboro Area Senior High School. The winners were announced at the club’s 92nd banquet May 20 in Waynesboro Country Club.
The students are: Katie Baker and Rachel Moore, who were awarded $7,000 each; and Lexi Swiney, who was awarded $6,000. Scholarships of $5,000 each were presented to: Lily Cool, Breanna McIlquam and Nate Nystrom.
Katie, daughter of Jeremy and Cheri Baker, will major in biology/pre-vet at Shenandoah University and plans to become a veterinarian. She is a member of National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, marching band and the field hockey, swim and track and field teams. She also worked at Twin Kiss and was a cleaner at the high school.
Rachel, daughter of Jake and Jeanette Moore, will major in pre-pharmacy/pharmacy at Wilkes University Nesbit School of Pharmacy and plans to become a community pharmacist and associate professor of pharmacy. She is a member of National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, PA Math League, the basketball team and the Class of 2026 Executive Council. Rachel is a pharmacy technician at Waynesboro Apothecary and a manager/cook at the Pennsylvania Dutch Market – Vernas Sub Shop. She also is a youth group leader at Doylesburg United Methodist Church and has volunteered with Special Olympics and Trunk or Treat and coached at the YMCA.
Lexi, daughter of Mike and Kristy Swiney, will major in neuroscience at Belmont University and plans to become a psychiatrist. She is the founding president of the debate club, secretary of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and a member of student council, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, PA Math League and Braves to Indians. Lexi is a waitress at the Velvet Cafe, cook at Verna’s Sub Shop and a personal aid.
Lily, daughter of Rodney and Janelle Cool, will major in film production at Penn State University (main campus), and hopes to have her own local production studio to shoot local commercials. She is a member of National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Junior Civitan Club, Executive Council of 2026, Braves to Indians and Aevidum. Lily worked as a cleaner at Liberty Mountain resort and a barista at Brio Coffeehouse and works at Walmart. She also takes acting and film classes.
Breanna, daughter of Eric and Sharon McIlquham, will major in elementary education at Frostburg State University and plans to return to the community to be an elementary teacher and youth sports coach. She was a member of the volleyball, basketball, softball and track and field teams. Breanna also was a member of National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Executive Council and PA Math League, and was a member of the homecoming court. She was a four-year member and captain of the GC Fire Travel Basketball team and selected as the Outstanding Player of the Jersey Shore Live Tournament. Breanna was a captain and four-year player for the Edge Travel Volleyball team, a member of the Edge Travel Softball team that finished first in Pennsylvania, the Extreme Travel Softball team, and the Smithsburg Flag Football team, receiving the True Grit award. She has volunteered as an elementary basketball coach, a referee at Waynesboro Area YMCA, and a volleyball coach for the Waynesboro youth team. Breanna also has volunteered at the Waynesboro Area School District Softball Youth Camp and elementary track meet and preschool reader program, the Challengers Special Needs Softball team, Waynesboro Special Olympics and at Mowrey Elementary and Waynesboro Area Middle schools.
Nate, son of Dan and Emily Nystrom, will major in computer science/engineering at Lebanon Valley College and plans to specialize in cyber security. He was a member of National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the basketball and baseball programs. Nate also was a member of travel baseball teams, attended LCBC Church and volunteered at basketball camps/clinics throughout the year. He was a summer worker for the school district and completed an internship at JLG.
Officers of the club for the 2026-27 year announced at the banquet include: Debi Duffey, president; Barb Kehr, vice president; Karen Herald, recording secretary; Debbie Pflager, corresponding secretary; and Ruth Strausbaugh, treasurer.
