WAYNESBORO, Pa – Calling all prospective birders. Buttonwood Nature Center is offering two Birding for Beginners programs—one for families and one for teens and adults.
The family session is on Sat., May 23 and the teens/adults session is on Sat., May 30. Both sessions run from 10 to 11 a.m. at Buttonwood Nature Center near Waynesboro, Pa.
Buttonwood educators will delve into the basics of birding. Participants learn how to use binoculars properly when birding, as well as how to listen for and identify bird songs and calls.
“Local birding groups have spotted up to 60 different species at Buttonwood, like warblers, finches and woodpeckers,” said Mary Claire King, Buttonwood’s community science coordinator and the event organizer. “We will count how many our group can find.”
Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes. Some binoculars will be available to borrow on a first come, first served basis, but bring binoculars if you have them.
The birding programs are free, but registration is required. Limited to 20. The teens/adults session is for those age 15 and up. See details and register at www.buttonwoodnaturecenter.org.
This program is underwritten in part by Buttonwood’s Naturalist Discovery Series sponsors, Pam and Bruce Rowland and Conococheague Audubon. Additional support is by Today’s Horizon Fund contributors: The Nora Roberts Foundation, Mary Marshall Buckey in memory of her parents, the late George and Marty Buckey, Marge Kiersz, Don Gibe and Nancy Erlanson, APX Enclosures, and the family of the late Carolyn Terry Eddy, with daughters Connie Fleagle & Kim Larkin.
