Commissioners recognize Earth Day and environmental education in Franklin County

Franklin County Commissioner Chairman Dean Horst, Senior Planner Colleen Tidd (center) and Commissioner Bob Ziobrowski announced Earth Day 2026 for April 25.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Franklin County Commissioners have proclaimed April 25, as Earth Day in Franklin County. Through this proclamation, the commissioners highlight their support for balancing growth with responsible environmental stewardship and their ongoing commitment to partnering with local organizations on environmental education.

Franklin County’s 10-year comprehensive plan, Imagine Franklin 2035, provides a blueprint for responsible, harmonious growth and development. It incorporates key environmental objectives, including:

  • Sustaining open spaces
  • Preserving the aesthetic and historic character of communities
  • Protecting valuable farmland
  • Safeguarding forests, streams, and other natural recreational areas

These efforts aim to benefit both current residents and future generations.

“As more residents and businesses choose to call our area home, it’s essential that we as community leaders guide growth responsibly so we can preserve our natural resources and open spaces for the generations that follow,” said Franklin County Commissioner Chairman Dean Horst. “Earth Day reminds us to value and protect the natural assets – our parks, forests and streams – that we sometimes overlook.”

By recognizing Earth Day, the commissioners reaffirm their support for educational programming and events that help local children and residents better understand and appreciate the environment and the importance of caring for it.
