HAGERSTOWN, Md. – Grant Semler fired a two-hit shutout and helped his cause with a triple and an RBI to lift North Hagerstown to a 12-0 victory over Urbana on Saturday during the Barrel Nation Showcase at Meritus Park.
Semler struck out six in the five-inning performance ended by the 10-run rule. He also drew two walks.
The Hubs, who moved to 7-1, scored six runs in the second and five in the fourth to put the game on ice.
Eli Brown and James Ortiz had two hits each for the Hubs. Brown doubled, drove in two runs and scored twice, while Ortiz drove in two runs – one with a sacrifice fly – and scored a run.
Jackson Coulter and Joey Dorsey each drove in two runs for North.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Shepherd 4-3, Mansfield 0-9
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Pitcher Madelayne Ruffner continued her dominant run from the circle, by firing her second consecutive complete-game shutout to lift Shepherd University to a game one win and a split of a PSAC East doubleheader with Mansfield.
Ruffner (10-7) went seven innings allowing two hits and two walks while striking out 16.
This win comes on the heels of a shutout win over Lock Haven on Friday, where she struck out 16. She also sealed a doubleheader sweep on Friday by earning a save in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener when infielder Cate Russian doubled and scored on a single by first baseman Brenna Collis.
The Rams (18-18, 13-11) added a run in the third as Russian reached on an error and later scored on infielder Jordan Gugliuzza’s sacrifice fly).
The Rams added two runs in the sixth on catcher Madelyn Chambers RBI double and a run-scoring single by Russian.
Outfielder Lexi McAllister, Russian, and Collis each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
In the nightcap, Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single Boonsboro’s Haylee Hartman. They made it 2-0 in the third when infielder Hailey Putnam drew a bases-loaded walk.
Mansfield (6-26, 3-21) plated seven runs in the fourth, highlighted by a grand slam by Shannon Perlungher.
Putnam added an RBI-single in the fifth to cut the lead to 7-3 and finished with two more runs in the sixth.
Hartman and Collis each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
West Chester 25-18, Shepherd 4-3
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – West Chester overpowered Shepherd University with 45 runs in two games on Saturday to sweep a PSAC East doubleheader.
West Chester (29-8, 14-6) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning before extending it to 3-0 lead in the second.
West Chester plated four runs in the fourth, highlighted by a three-run blast from Hunter Smith.
Shepherd (24-17, 11-9 got on the board in the fourth when first baseman Nik Rubendall walked and later scored when outfielder Ethan Jones reached on an error.
The Golden Rams moved to a 13-1 lead with an eight-run fifth inning fueled by Carter Rust’s grand slam.
The Rams scored three in the sixth on a pair of home runs – a a two-run blast by third baseman Nathaniel Brookshire and a solo shot from pinch hitter Chase Herndon.
West Chester scored nine runs in the seventh to cap the scoring.
In the nightcap, West Chester took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and added three runs in the second and eight runs in the third to post a 15-0 lead.
Shepherd scored two runs in the fourth when infielder Andrew O’Brien had an RBI double and outfielder Bodie Pullen added a run-scoring single.
The Golden Rams scored one in the fifth and two more two runs the seventh on two hits to take an 18-2 lead.
Shepherd scored a run in the seventh on a solo homer by infielder Ryan Fluharty.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Frostburg State at Meritus Park in Hagerstown (Md.) for a single game.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
East Stroudsburg 21, Shepherd 3
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Sadie Kauffman had four goals and Jolee Roth added three goals and five assists to lead No. 5-ranked East Stroudsburg swept past Shepherd University in a PSAC East game on Saturday.
Attacker Rebekah Forney had a goal and an assist to pace the Rams.
Attacker Hadley Robertson and midfielder Aubrey Harrison each netted a goal, while attacker Kloey Batchellor added an assist for Shepherd.
