WAYNESBORO, Pa. — The Pollinator and Wildlife Group at the Church of the Apostles, United Church of Christ, is offering free young milkweed and fennel plants for transplanting through May 15.
Both plant varieties play an important role in supporting local butterfly populations. Milkweed serves as the primary host plant for the monarch butterfly, while fennel provides habitat for the black swallowtail butterfly. Organizers say offering these starter plants helps encourage sustainable gardening and pollinator conservation.
Community members interested in receiving plants can contact group member Bob Benchoff at 717-377-4729 or by email at [email protected].
Benchoff said the project aims to inspire residents to cultivate pollinator-friendly spaces and contribute to regional efforts to protect declining butterfly species.
