WAYNESBORO – Arbor Day will be observed at Green Hill Cemetery, 953 S. Potomac St., Friday, April 24.
The program begins at 3 p.m. in the cemetery office and will feature an exhibit about four horticulturists buried in the cemetery: Ellen Brandt Fahnestock (1850–1940), Agnes N. L. Harbaugh (1895–1976), Henry Eichholz (1864–1939) and Ferdinand S. Gilbert (1861–1934), and a guided tour of the cemetery highlighting 15 special varieties of trees.
For years, Fahnestock obtained tree saplings from the state nursery and distributed them to school children on Arbor Day. Harbaugh had a long and varied career in horticulture, including employment at the Los Angeles City and County Arboretum. Eichholz gained prominence among floriculturists by propagating numerous new varieties of flowers. Gilbert was an active horticulturist whose topiary zoo along South Potomac Street brought Waynesboro national attention during the 1920s and 1930s. Gilbert also served 45 years as superintendent of Green Hill.
Quinn Coulter, sophomore at Waynesboro Area Senior High School and
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Young Ambassador, will conduct the tour of the cemetery.
Following the tour, light refreshments will be served in the cemetery office.
