Waynesboro schools delay after water main break, boil advisory

WAYNESBORO, Pa. – A major water main break at the intersection of Broad and Main streets Monday morning has left the Borough of Waynesboro without water service and forced local schools into a two-hour delay.

The Waynesboro Borough Authority issued a mandatory boil water notice for all customers in the borough and the surrounding Zullinger area. Officials said the break caused a total loss of positive water pressure, a condition that increases the risk of microbial contamination through back-flow or siphoning.

Crews remain on-site Monday morning working to repair the leak. The Waynesboro Area School District adjusted its schedule to accommodate the utility failure, though officials warned that even once water is restored, the safety notice will remain in effect.

“Once service is restored, residents will be under a boil water notice for three days,” the borough reported in a statement.

The authority advises residents to use bottled water or bring tap water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before consumption. This precaution applies to drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection standards, a loss in pressure can allow bacteria, viruses or parasites to enter the distribution system. While no illnesses have been reported, the borough noted that these organisms can cause nausea, cramps, and diarrhea.

“Guardians of infants and people with compromised immune systems should seek advice from their health care advisors,” the notice stated.

The borough will notify customers when corrective actions are complete and the water is deemed safe for use without boiling. Residents seeking additional information may contact the Borough of Waynesboro at 717-762-2101.
