Frederick Jack Weihl, known as “Jack,” was born in Weston, WV on August 1, 1941, and passed away on April 9, 2026, due to natural causes. His vibrant, warm personality lit up every room he stepped into, and his dynamic voice will forever resonate in the hearts of all who knew him.

Jack was the son of Fred P. Weihl and Pauline Bender Weihl, and grew up alongside his sister, Jo Ann Weihl Jennings, who preceded him in death. Jack’s passion for education and sports was inspired by his father, who was superintendent of schools in Berkeley Springs, WV and who played football in the first Cotton Bowl.

With master’s degrees in political science and history from West Virginia University, Jack’s career in education spanned over 40 years. He started teaching at Smithsburg High School (Smithsburg, MD) in the late 1960’s, where he was also varsity football coach. Known for being a spirited orator, Jack taught for 3 decades at North Hagerstown High School and at Hagerstown Community College (Hagerstown, MD), before retiring in 2006 after returning to Smithsburg Middle School. Jack took his personal beliefs and civic duty seriously throughout his life. He served as campaign manager for state representatives, as Judge of Voters, and actively volunteered in his community and church.

Family was always Jack’s top priority. He met his wife of nearly 50 years, Deborah Sue Potter Weihl of Waynesboro, PA, in 1976, when they worked together to negotiate teacher’s contracts. They married the next year and had two children, F. Jackson Weihl of Fanwood, NJ and Alicia Weihl Guerin of Coral Gables, FL. Jack was the most dedicated, big-hearted father. He never missed a ballet performance or basketball game, and loved visiting national parks, attending Orioles and Penn State football games, and traveling across the US and Europe with his family. Becoming a grandfather was one of his greatest joys. He is survived by his wife, 2 children, daughter-in-law Jamie Weihl, son-in-law Benoit Guerin, and his 5 adoring grandchildren: Preston, Gavin, and Makena Weihl and Aymerick and Audrey Guerin.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., Thursday evening, April 16, 2026, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, PA. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 17, 2026, at 11:00 A.M. in Faith in Christ Church, 100 S. Church St., Waynesboro, PA, followed by a burial service at Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
