Firefighters returned to Greene Township early Sunday morning after Saturday’s mountain fire in the area of Knob Hill Road and Ridge Road reignited and spread beyond containment lines.
Franklin Fire Company reported that Brush 44 and several mutual aid departments were dispatched shortly after 5 a.m. as the blaze flared up again. By 7 a.m., helicopters were making water drops to slow the spread, and the Pennsylvania Department of Forestry and mountain fire strike teams were working the scene. Officials said there was no threat to any structures.
As of 10 a.m., approximately 20 acres have burned in total. Brush 7 from Fayetteville remains on scene with forestry crews, while the Michaux State Forest fire team has command. The Piney Mountain Strike Team from Cumberland County and Letterkenny Army Depot fire personnel were also assisting earlier in the morning.
Around noon Sunday, Waynesboro Volunteer Fire Department reported that Rescue Engine 2 and fire police were dispatched to assist Franklin Fire Company with multiple brush fires along Buchanan Trail East in the area of the DL George lot. The road was closed in both directions from the top of the mountain to the Sportsmen’s Club in Adams County.
Crews continued to build additional fire lines and extinguish hot spots throughout the day to secure the area and respond to new brush fires as conditions remained dry and windy.
