Regional theatre roundup

Spring brings a full lineup of live performances and local theater across south-central Pennsylvania and western Maryland. From timeless musicals and engaging dramas to youth productions and orchestral tributes, stages throughout Franklin, Washington, and Frederick counties are coming alive. Whether you prefer a lighthearted beach tribute, a classic southern story, or a modern satire, there’s a show this month to match every taste.

Franklin County, Pa.

The Totem Pole Playhouse in Fayetteville will host Light’s Out: The Jersey Beach Boys on April 18 and 19. The performance is sponsored by the Franklin County Visitors Bureau and Adams Electric Cooperative. Totem Pole Playhouse website.

Chambersburg Community Theatre will bring Steel Magnolias to the stage May 1–3. The cast has been rehearsing for several weeks, and organizers promise an engaging performance. Tickets are available in advance at cctonline.org or at the door on show dates.

Greencastle Amateur Players will hold open auditions for Alice in Wonderland on April 23 at 5:30 p.m. and April 25 at 2 p.m. at the Jerome King Playground Bandshell. Show dates are set for July 10 and 11. No prior experience or preparation is necessary, and actors ages 5 to 18 are welcome. All who audition will be cast. Capitol Theatre in Chambersburg, will host “Philadelphia Freedom,” a tribute to Elton John, performs Saturday, April 11, at 7 p.m.. and The Exchange Club of Chambersburg will present the Comedy & Magic Spectacular Saturday, April 18, at 7 p.m. thecapitoltheatre.org

Washington County, Md.

The Maryland Theatre in downtown Hagerstown will feature Hadestown: Teen Edition, presented by the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts. Show dates are April 18–19 and April 25–26. Mayland Theatre Website.

The Maryland Symphony Orchestra will present John Williams: Music from the Movies on Saturday, April 11, at 7 p.m. at The Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown. The concert will feature music from films including SupermanJurassic ParkStar WarsHarry Potter, and Indiana Jones. marylandsymphony.org.

The Authentic Community Theatre in Hagerstown is staging two productions this month. Misery, based on the Stephen King novel, will run through April 19. On April 25, the theater will host Gala. https://www.actforall.org/tickets

The Washington County Playhouse Dinner Theatre continues its production of Oklahoma! through May 31.

The Playhouse will hold auditions for Tarzan! on Tuesday, April 21. Sign-in begins at 6 p.m.; auditions start at 6:30 p.m. All roles are open. Performances run June 26–Aug. 16.

At Hagerstown Community College’s Kepler Theater, audiences can catch the satirical musical Urinetown on Friday, April 24; Saturday, April 25; and Sunday, April 26.

Frederick County, Md.

The Maryland Ensemble Theatre will present Arthur and Friends Make a Musical on various weekends from April 18 through May 10. A special performance is also scheduled for April 19. https://marylandensemble.org/
