DCNR marks Pink Moon

The Pink Moon will brighten the night sky Tuesday, with the full moon expected to reach peak illumination at 10:41 p.m. April 1, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

DCNR said the moon may appear full and bright in the nights before and after peak illumination, weather permitting. The agency noted the April full moon is commonly called the Pink Moon, a name tied to pink phlox flowers that bloom across North America this time of year.

The seasonal name is one of several traditional monikers for April’s full moon. DCNR’s graphic also listed other names associated with this time of year, including the Breaking Ice Moon, Seed Moon and Egg Moon.

According to DCNR, Native Americans and Europeans named the moons for natural events that occur during the season.
