HAGERSTOWN, Md. – The South Hagerstown baseball team had a little of everything on Friday enroute to moving to 3-0 on the season.
The Rebels got a big early, a huge late rally to go with a strong pitching and clutch hitting performance to pull out an 11-9 win over Frederick.
South took an early 5-0 lead, but needed a six-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out the win. Grant Louchery provided the key hit in the rally with a two-run double.
Ethan Shepherd had two hits and four RBIs for the Rebels, while Derek Kline ripped three hits to key the offense. Brayden Ocasio and Logan Hammond added two hits each.
Starting pitcher Shwan Higgins pitched well, going five innings and allowing one earned run with eight strikeouts. But the Rebels committed six errors to squander the early lead to fall behind 8-5.
Ocasio pitched the final two innings to lock down the win.
South returns to action on Monday when it travels to face crosstown rival North Hagerstown.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Shepherd 9-0, Millersville 7-7
MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Outfielder Brodie Pullen collected two hits and three RBIs and scored twice to lead Shepherd University to a first-game victory and a split of a doubleheader with Millersville on Saturday.
Millersville pitcher Rece Ritchey pitched five shutout innings, allowing six hits and a walk while striking out seven to move to 2-0 in the nightcap.
The Rams (16-12, 4-4 PSAC East) bounced back after dropping a pair of games to Millersville on Friday.
Shepherd built a 5-4 lead before scoring four runs in the top of the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Pullen gave the Rams a 1-0 in the top of the first by walking and eventually scoring when infielder Evan Rosario reached on an error. Millersville quickly tied the game 1-1 on a sacrifice fly from Brady Ebbert.
Pullen’s RBI single gave the Rams a 2-1 advantage in the second, but the Marauders tied the game in the bottom of the inning before taking a 4-2 lead in the third on a Jimmy Kirk two-run homer in the third.
Shepherd regained the lead in the fourth on an RBI double by infielder Andrew O’Brien and Pullen’s two-run homer to go up 5-4.
O’Brien’s two-run single highlighted Shepherd’s four-run fifth.
Millersville got a run in the fifth on a solo homer by Ebbert and got a two-run double from Sammy Laux in the seventh, but Millersville fell short.
Xavier Smith hit a solo homer in the second inning of the nightcap to give Millersville (20-7, 5-3) a 1-0 lead. The Marauders added four runs in the third and two in the fifth to complete the shutout.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
East Stroudsburg 21, Shepherd 4
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Four players scored three goals to lead No. 9-ranked East Stroudsburg (over Shepherd on Saturday.
Senior attacker Rebekah Forney scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Rams (2-7, 1-5).
Midfielders Grace Lyon added a goal and an assist, while Katherine Stevenson netted a goal.
