The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Franklin and Washington counties in Pennsylvania and Maryland until 8 p.m. Wednesday as a line of strong storms moves through the region.
Showers and thunderstorms are likely this afternoon, mainly after 4 p.m. Some storms could become severe, bringing damaging winds, heavy rain and the potential for isolated tornadoes. Temperatures are expected to reach a high near 76 degrees with southwest winds around 15 mph and gusts up to 25 mph.
Tonight, showers and thunderstorms will continue, with a low around 36 degrees. Some storms could remain severe. Winds from the southwest will range from 9 to 13 mph with gusts as high as 29 mph. The chance of precipitation is 90%.
Residents are urged to stay alert and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings. The National Weather Service recommends listening to local news updates or a NOAA Weather Radio for the latest information.
Tornado Safety Tips
- At home: If a tornado warning is issued, go to a basement, safe room or interior room away from windows. Bring pets with you if time allows.
- At work or school: Follow your tornado drill and move quickly to designated shelter areas. Avoid large open spaces such as cafeterias, gymnasiums or auditoriums.
- Outdoors: Seek shelter in a sturdy building immediately. Avoid sheds, mobile homes and tents.
- In a vehicle: Vehicles are unsafe during a tornado. Drive to the nearest shelter if possible. If you cannot reach shelter, lie down in your car and cover your head or move to a low-lying area such as a ditch or ravine.
Residents are encouraged to remain weather aware throughout the evening as conditions may change rapidly.
