Smithsburg girls win again (22-0); Shepherd women win, but men lose

BRUNSWICK, Md. – Two straight nights. Two straight wins. 

The Smithsburg girls basketball team played its second game in consecutive nights on Wednesday and got the usual results in a 71-33 victory over Brunswick. 

Skyla Mastronardi led the undefeated Leopards with 24 points, hitting 11 of 15 shots – including a three-pointer. She also dished off four assists.  

Claire Bono 14 points as the Leopards had nine players score in the game. Bono added four steals. 

Jenna Todd scored seven points, while asserting herself in the game with four blocked shots and three assists. 

Smithsburg retuned the floor on the heels of a 67-39 over Liberty on Tuesday. The Leopards reward will a third game in three days when they host Allegany on Thursday. 

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 

Shepherd 77, West Chester 63 

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.– Sophomore Lamaria Estridge led Shepherd University with a game-high 19 points on Wednesday in a PSAC East victory over West Chester.  

Estridge tied a career-high effort with 12 rebounds, while adding four steals and two blocks.  

It was the fifth straight win for the Rams (10-13, 8-10), who have won seven of the last eight to rebound from a 3-12 start. 

Junior Kara Wehner added 14 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals for the Rams, while junior Cassidy Rhodes had 12 points and four rebounds. Sophomore Trinity Turner added seven points and a season-high 10 rebounds.  

Macie McCracken added a game-high 21 points and eight boards for the Golden Rams (10-14, 6-12). 

MEN’S BASKETBALL 

West Chester 80, Shepherd 74 

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.Ruben Rodriguez scored 21 points and Anthony McCall added 20 to lead West Chester to PSAC East win over Shepherd University to end the Rams’ seven-game winning streak. 

Sophomore Elwyne Wordlaw led the Rams (16-9, 12-6) with a career-high 32 points. 

Junior Marcus Banks tied a career high with 26 points to go with six rebounds and a pair of assists. 

Gabe Moss added 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Golden Rams (19-6, 13-5).
