Ben Foster won all six of his matches at 157 pounds to win an Outstanding Wrestler award on Saturday to lead Smithsburg at Walkersville’s Sgt. Charles Cartwright Memorial Tournament.
Kaden Dietrich followed Foster with a 5-1 record at 150, while Jackson Crutchfield (106), Logan Crutchfield (144) and Trevor Jessup (285) went 4-2 at the event. Jonathan Dempsher was 1-1 at 138 at the tournament.
Smithsburg opened season on Wednesday with a 42-38 loss to Catoctin in its season and home opener.
The match was named the Joe Dietrich Legends Classic, in honor of the Leopards’ former coach who retired after 47 years of service. The Classic will become an annual event for every Leopards wrestling home opener.
Jackson Crutchfield, Logan Crutchfield, Foster and Jessup each won matches against Catoctin. Rileigh Romsberger also won her match in the coed division. The Leopards were hampered by forfeits in three weight classes.
Kaden Dietrich lost a tough battle, falling to Catoctin’s Ashton Thompson, who played in the state tournament last season.
South Hagerstown opens in round-robin tournament
Logan Ardinger, Hunter Benson and Paul Ngolle each with 4-1 on Saturday to lead South Hagerstown at the Snacktown Duals in Hanover, Pennsylvania.
The Rebels went 1-4 on the day, scoring a 47-24 victory over Columbia. In the other matches, South lost to Schuylkill Valley (42-36), East Pennsboro (51-24), Susquehannock (48-26) and Kennard-Dale (53-24).
Wyatt Roberts went 3-2 for South at the tournament, while Gabe Galante split two matches.
